Mission

Founded in 1990, the American Bar Association Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (CEELI) is one of the leading technical legal assistance providers in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.

Through its volunteer legal liaison program as well as its training institute in Prague, CEELI makes available American and European legal expertise and technical assistance for these emerging democracies in modifying and restructuring laws and legal systems. More than 5,000 lawyers, judges, and law professors have contributed the equivalent of $180 million in pro bono services to date. In addition to its field offices and local staff, CEELI headquarters staff in Washington, D.C. provides technical support to all programs and conducts specialized research organized around focal areas.

The American Bar Association is the largest voluntary professional association in the world. With more than 400,000 members, the ABA provides law school accreditation, continuing legal education, information about the law, programs to assist lawyers and judges in their work, and initiatives to improve the legal system for the public.
